29-year-old Jean Vigo dies of septicemia, less than a month after the premiere of his final film l’Atalante, the filming of which took a heavy toll on his health. The film, about which Vigo prophetically said “I am killing myself with l’Atalante,” was heavily edited by Gaumont-FFA following negative reaction from exhibitor’s in April, and retitled Le Chaland qui Passe. Release of Marcel Pagnol’s Angele, the tale of a peasant girl (Orane Demazis) who becomes a prostitute in the city after becoming pregnant. The film was shot on location in Marseilles, where its premiere was held on 28th September. [ADD] | |||
