Dante Desarthe's Cours toujours (Dad on the Run), a farcical comedy concerning a father’s efforts to bury the foreskin of his recently circumcised son, is released.   Clément Sibony stars as the harassed father. [ADD]

Agnès Jaoui co-writes, directs and appears in Le Goût des autres (The Taste of Others) with co-writer and long-term partner Jean-Pierre Bacri.   Bacri plays Castella, a wealthy but uncultured businessman who develops a crush on a teacher, Clara, played by Anne Alvaro. [ADD]

François Ozon's Gouttes d'eau sur pierres brûlantes (Water Drops On Burning Rocks), an adaptation of an unperformed play written by Rainer Werner Fassbinder in the 60s, is released.   Malik Zide and Bernard Giraudeau star. [ADD]

Bernard Rapp’s Une affaire de goût (A Matter of Taste), starring Bernard Giraudeau and Jean-Pierre Lorit, is released. [ADD]

Roland Joffé’s Vatel is released.   Gérard Depardieu plays the title role, steward to the Prince de Conde (Julian Glover) who must prepare a feast for the visit of King Louis XIV  (Julian Sands).   Uma Thurman and Murray Lachlan Young also star. [ADD]

Jean-Luc Godard’s 17-minute short film, L'Origine du XXIème siècle (Origins of the 21st Century), opens this year’s Cannes Film Festival.   A compilation of war footage and Nazi atrocities, it was commissioned by the organizers of the festival to commemorate cinema as it enters its second full century. Lars von Trier’s Dancer in the Dark wins the Palme d'Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. [ADD]

Laurent Firode's Le Battement d'ailes du papillon (The Beating of Butterfly's Wings), starring Audrey Tatou, is released. [ADD]

Agnès Varda's Les Glaneurs et la glaneuse (The Gleaners & I) goes on general release one day after being screened on French television. [ADD]

Dominik Moll's Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien (With a Friend Like Harry) is released.  Spanish actor Sergi Lopez stars in the title role, with support from Laurent Lucas, Sophie Guillemin and Mathilde Seigner. [ADD]

Caroline Vignal 's debut full-length feature, Les Autres filles (Other Girls), is released.   Julie Leclercq plays an innocent country girl who moves to Toulouse to study hairdressing and finds a new circle of friends whose carefree lifestyle she envies.   Benoîte Sapim also stars. [ADD]

Mathieu Kassovitz’ thriller Les Rivières pourpres (The Crimson Rivers) is released.   Jean Reno and Vincent Cassel play police officers who join forces to investigate a grisly murder.   Jean-Pierre Cassel, Vincent's father, also appears. [ADD]

Claude Mouréras' Tout va bien, on s'en va (Everything's Fine, We're Leaving) is released.   Miou-Miou, Sandrine Kiberlain and Natacha Régnier play sisters whose father (Michel Piccoli) reappears in their lives after an absence of fifteen years. [ADD]

25/10 -

Claude Chabrol 's Merci pour le chocolat (Thanks for the Chocolate; a.k.a. Nightcap) is released.   Isabelle Huppert, Jacques Dutronc and Anna Mouglalis star in an Hitchcockian thriller. [ADD]

German director Michael Haneke's Code inconnu: Récit incomplet de divers voyages (Code Unknown: Incomplete Tales of Several Journeys) is released.   Juliette Binoche, Alexandre Hamidi, Thierry Neuvic, Luminita Gheorghiu and Ona Lu Yenke star. [ADD]

Jean-Pierre Denis' Les Blessures assassines (Murderous Maids), which tells the true story of the Papin sisters, two maids who conducted an incestuous lesbian relationship and murdered their rich female employee and her daughter in 1933, is released.   Sylvie Testud and Julie-Marie Parmentier star. Gérard Corbiau's Le Roi danse (The King Is Dancing), the tale of Louis XIV’s reign as King of France, is released.   Boris Terral, Tchéky Karyo and Benoît Magimel star. [ADD]

Lasse Hallström’s Chocolat is released.   Juliette Binoche stars as a woman who opens a chocolatier in a small village in 1959 and changes the lives of the repressed residents.   Alfred Molina, Johnny Depp, Lena Olin, Judi Dench, Carrie-Anne Moss, Leslie Caron and Victoire Thivisol star. [ADD]
