  17/8 - Alexander Korda’s The Private Life of Henry VIII, starring Charles Laughton, Elsa Lanchester, Robert Donat, Merle Oberon and Binnie Barnes, premieres in London. The film, which cost £93,710 to produce goes on to earn more than £500,000 internationally. [ADD]
 
  1/9 - The British Film Institute is established. The Duke of Sutherland is appointed its first president, while novelist John Buchan is nominated president of the advisory board. The Institute’s aim is to “encourage the development of the art of the film [and] to testify to life and its mores.” It also announces plans to publish a magazine of reviews and articles called The Monthly Film Bulletin.   15/9 - The government discontinues its funding of the Empire Marketing Board, Britain’s documentary filmmaking organisation. The unit will now be sponsored by the GPO (General Post Office) and will be known as the GPO Film Unit. [ADD]
