Emily Kane receives a note telling her to visit an address where she and Kane find Gettys waiting for them The apartment is Susan's, and Gettys threatens to expose Kane's affair unless he withdraws from the election Disillusioned by Kane's infidelity, Leland demands to be transferred to Chicago With his marriage and political ambitions wrecked, Kane unsuccessfully attempts to promote Susan as an opera singer After her disastrous debut, Kane hears his reporters organising a positive report of her performance Kane finds Leland passed out over a negative review of Susan's preformance and finishes the review before firing his former friend

Susan is driven to a suicide attempt by Kane's pressure on her to perform The Kanes retreat to the cavernous Xanadu ... where a bored Susan fills her time solving jigsaw puzzles

Thompson's final interviewee is Raymond, Kane's shady butler Susan finally decides to leave Kane After trashing Susan's room Kane faces a life alone... Following Kane's death his belongings are gathered in the reception haall of Xanadu One of the objects considered worthless and thrown into an incinerator is Rosebud, Kane's childhood sled. Thompson's quest has been unsuccessful, and we are still no nearer to understanding the man
