The film is comprised of two stories.   In the first, La voce umane, a woman alone receives a series of calls from her former lover, who has ended their affair to marry another woman.   In the second story a simple homeless woman sleeps with a tramp she believes to be Saint Joseph.  She becomes pregnant, and suffers the scorn of villagers as she prepares for the birth of Jesus Christ.
