50-year-old Jean Doulean works in Paris as a teacher.   He is separated from his wife, Hélène, who lives in England with another man.   Following their break-up, Jean began a relationship with Madeleine, but it is not a happy one.   After becoming involved in an incident with the police, Jean is transferred to another school.   He discovers that his 18-year-old daughter Isabelle intends to abandon her studies to live with her boyfriend, Marc.   During the argument that follows this discovery, Jeans slaps his daughter’s face.   She leaves Jean to live with her mother in England.
