The Fengtai Photography Studio

The Fengtai Photography Studio was established in Beijing in 1892 by Ren Qingtai, a 42-year-old business entrepreneur with interests in pharmaceuticals, soft drinks, furniture and theatre.  Equipped with the latest technology, the studio, which was the first in Beijing, proved to be a massive success.   In the room next door to the studio Ren showed motion pictures, but when these fell in short supply he decided to produce his own films, beginning with Ding jun shan, China's first indigenous film.  The film met with huge success, and the studio produced a further six films over the next four years.  The studio was destroyed by fire in 1909, bringing to an end the film career of its owner.
