December 1910: The Morrison Family Move to Earlham

Clyde Morrison had been happy enough working at Smith’s Drugstore in Winterset, but both he and his wife were dissatisfied with the money he earned working for someone else and Clyde had an urge to be his own boss.   After Clyde's father had made it known to the family that his son wanted to better himself a cousin advised him of an opening for a pharmacist in a small town called Brooklyn and the Morrison family soon upped sticks and moved there – only for Clyde to discover that this job was no better than the last.

Clyde then learned that the Rexall Drug Store in Earlham was for sale and, with a loan from his father, quickly snapped it up.   Clyde, however, was dogged by bad luck: the town’s small population, together with Clyde’s reluctance to push hard-up customers for payment, meant that the business was unsustainable and he was forced to file for bankruptcy on 30th December 1911.
