August 1901: Britain's First Cinema
Britain's first cinema opened its doors for business in the first week of August this year, the brainchild of the Royal Animated and Singing Picture Co. It was situated in what had previously been the Mohawk's Hall in Upper Street, Islington, London, and its first presentation included The Rajah's Dream, Or The Enchanted Forest, a trick film by Georges Méliès, which the management advertised as 'the finest mysterious picture ever placed before the public'. Other films included recordings of music hall artistes played with synchronised sound, and scenes of the recent Boer War. Price of admission to the show was as high as three shillings. [ADD]
