1901: Lubin Flees

Biograph were not the only high-profile victims of Judge Wheeler's decision in relation to Edison's legal battles over copyrights and patents. Siegmund Lubin, on the advice of his lawyers, fled to Germany when Edison hired Jacob Blair Smith, Lubin's former chief photographer, on a generous salary of $25 a week. Lubin knew Blair was in a position to testify to Lubin's infringement of Edison's patents if necessary. Lubin relocated to Berlin, from where he continued to sell films, but would return to the States when Judge Wheeler's decision was overturned the following year. [ADD]
