1904: Taylor Tarnishes His Lenses
In 1896, H. Dennis Taylor had observed that old lenses that had become tarnished transmitted more light than newly polished lenses, and believed this was because the layer of tarnish had a lower refractive index than the glass, and therefore reflected less. Taylor’s British patent (No. 29561) was for the use of chemicals to create a ‘tarnish’ on new lenses for improved performance. Unfortunately , the tarnishing of lenses was not of sufficient uniformity meaning that mass production of lenses using the process was not viable. [ADD]
