28/11/1910: Australia's
first Newsreel: Australia’ first newsreel, Pathe’s Animated Gazette (Australasian Edition), first saw the light of day on 28th November 1910 – nearly a year before America’s first newsreel – and was released on a weekly basis in various forms until the 943rd and final edition was released on 27th March 1929. The Gazette was produced at the Rushcutter’s Bay studio in Sydney, but Pathe relied heavily on the work of local ‘stringers’ from across the country, and issued cameras to theatre owners so that they could film local events. The Gazette generally focused on scheduled events such as parades, sports meetings and funerals so that filming could be planned in advance.
