  Tilly the Tomboy

Tilly the Tomboy was a popular series of films produced by film pioneer Cecil Hepworth between 1910 and 1915.   The short films starred Chrissie White and Alma Taylor as Tilly and Sally, a pair of naughty schoolgirls who get caught up in all manner of mischief.   The films, many of which were directed by Lewin Fitzhamon, were filled with fun and energy and appealed to all ages.   Hepworth originally wanted the dancer Unity More for the role of Tilly, but she was unavailable; unable to choose between White and Taylor he decided to have them both appear in the films.

‘One can watch her with pleasure, irrespective of the part she is playing, because she makes herself felt as an individual and is not merely a puppet: in short, she is quite a little feast in herself.’ A contemporary critic’s opinion of Chrissie White as Tilly the Tomboy.
