September 1932: Cinesound Review Absorbs The Herald Newsreel
While in 1930 there were no Australian weekly newsreels of any description, by the end of the following year there were no less than three on offer to filmgoers. The first, the Australian edition of the Fox Movietone News, appeared in January 1931. On September 21st of the same year, the first edition of The Herald Newsreel, an alliance of Herschell’s Films and the Melbourne Herald operating under the name of Australasian Films Productions, reached cinemas. It was quickly followed in November by Union Theatres’ Cinesound Review, which reached cinemas in time to carry a report on the 1931 Melbourne Cup. Although it tried to broaden its base by allying with local newspapers, The Herald Newsreel existed in its original incarnation for less than a year before it was absorbed by Cinesound Review so that all Australian newsreel production was situated in Sydney from late 1932. For a short period following the takeover the Cinesound Review was called the Herald Cinesound News Review.
