Japan

1/7 -

The Toho Studios are founded in Tokyo with a capital of 500,000 yen. [ADD]

Kenji Mizoguchi’s Gion no shimai (Sisters of the Gion), a sombre tale of two geishas, premieres in Tokyo. [ADD]

– An evil Mickey Mouse appears in Black Cat Banzai, an animated Japanese propaganda short. [ADD]

Redes (The Wave) is released.   It is co-directed by Paul Strand and Fred Zinnemann. [ADD]

Fernando de Fuentes’ Alla en Rancho Grande is released.   In 1938 it will receive a special recommendation at the Venice Film Festival for its overall artistic contribution.   It is also the first Mexican film to be released with English subtitles in the US. [ADD]

Fernando De Fuentes’ Vamonos con Pancho Villa, about a group of men from a small village who join Pancho Villa’s revolution, is released.   It is considered by many to be the best Mexican film ever made. [ADD]

Mongolia

– The Mongolkino studio is established. [ADD]

– The Soviet Union government donates twelve mobile film projectors, with sound films, to the Mongolian people. [ADD]

– Syn Mongolii, directed by Ilya Trauberg, is released.   It is the first feature film made in Mongolia. [ADD]

Poland

Aleksander Ford’s Droga Mlodych (Street of the Young), a documentary about Jewish and Polish orphans in a sanitarium, is banned because it is considered ‘a vehicle for communist propaganda.’ [ADD]

Sep -

Joseph Green’s Yidl mitn Fidl is released.   The film survives today only because Green took the negatives with him when he returned to his native America. [ADD]

Romania

– Tudor Posmantir contributes financially to the building of the Ciro-film laboratory. [ADD]

Thailand

– Mom Rachawong Anusak and Supaluk direct a screen adaptation of the famous stage drama Leard Supam for the Nakorn Film Company, using lakorn rong performers from the Pramothai troupe. [ADD]

– The Minister of the Interior introduces new film censorship legislation which lists eleven criteria for the banning of a film. [ADD]

– The Lawo Papayan Company is established by Prince Anusorn Mongkongkarn. [ADD]

Uruguay

– Juan Etchebere’s Dos Destinos, the country’s first sound film, is released.   Pepe Covi and Tina Lova star. [ADD]
