French character actor Philippe Noiret met Monique Chaumette, his wife-to-be, at the Théâtre National Populaire with whom he toured for seven years from 1953 after training at the Centre Dramatique de l'Ouest.   In addition to appearing in more than 40 plays, some of them with Chaumette, Noiret developed a comedy nightclub act with Jean-Pierre Darras during this time.   He also appeared with Chaumette in a 1959 television version of Macbeth (in which he played the part of MacDuff).

The couple were married in Paris on 13^th August 1962.
