– A new film law which abolishes ticket taxes and makes running a cinema a free trade is implemented.   Finance for film production is provided by the new Film Institute. [ADD]

– The Finnish Film Archives begins saving old Finnish films. [ADD]

Gabon

– Philippe Mory, considered to be the father of Gabonese cinema, makes Les Tam tams se sont tus (The Tam Tams are Silent) his first feature film. [ADD] 

Georgia

– A faculty of Cinema opens in the Tblisi Rustaveli Theatre Institute, which will later become the Tbilisi Theatre and Cinema Institute. [ADD]

Veteran Hollywood director William Dieterle dies at the age of 79 in Ottobrun, Bavaria. [ADD]

Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, der Zorn Gottes (Aguirre, the Wrath of God) is released.   Filmed in the Peruvian Andes, the film stars Klaus Kinski as Don Lope de Aguirre, a 16^th-Century conquistador driven insane by his lust for power and riches during an expedition in Peru. [ADD]
