Luchino Visconti’s ‘German decadence’ trilogy is completed with the release of Ludwig, The story of Ludwig II of Bavaria.   Helmut Berger stars in the title role, with Trevor Howard as Richard Wagner and Romy Schneider as Elizabeth of Austria. [ADD}

Federico Fellini’s Amarcord, largely based on memories of his own childhood, is released.  [ADD}

North Korea

– Future State leader Kim Jong Il’s book, On the Art of Cinema, is published.   All North Korean films are made in accordance with this book. [ADD}

– The Royal Nepal Film Corporation’s first film, Mann Ko Bandh, premieres in Kathmandu.   The film is directed by Prakesh Thapa. [ADD}

– Maula Jat, the most successful Pakistani film ever, is released. [ADD}

– The Société Nationale du Cinéma (SNC) is established. [ADD}

Spain

Victor Erice’s directorial debut El Espiritu de la colmena (The Spirit of the Beehive), in which a lonely village girl (Ana Torrent) becomes obsessed with Frankenstein’s monster after a travelling cinema shows Universal’s 1931 classic to her village, is released. [ADD}

Ingmar Bergman's Viskningar och rop (Cries and Whispers) is picked up for international release. [ADD}

Ingmar Bergman’s Scener ur ett äktenskap (Scenes from a Marriage) is broadcast in six 50-minute episodes on Swedish television.   Liv Ullmann, Erland Josephson and Bibi Andersson star. [ADD}

- Liao Hsiang-Hsiang’s Money, Money, Money is banned by the authorities for being ‘too real.’ [ADD}

Thailand

His Royal Highness Prince Anusorn Mongkonkarn sells his Lawo Papayon Film Company and Chalerm Keth Movie Theatre, ending his involvement in the film business. [ADD}
