– A Charter of African Film-makers is promulgated after the second congress of FEPACI in Algiers. [ADD]  

– The African nations attending the Algiers charter on African Cinema agree that the state of the film industry in Africa calls for militant organisation if it is to contend with other film industries. [ADD] 

– Mohammed Lakhdar-Hamina’s Chroniques des années de braises (Chronicle of the years of ember) wins the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. [ADD]

Ken Hannam’s Sunday Too Far Away premieres as the opening film at this year’s Sidney Film Festival. [ADD]

Peter Weir’s atmospheric mystery Picnic at Hanging Rock, in which three schoolgirls and a teacher disappear during a school outing in 1900, is released. [ADD] 

– The Australian Film Commission is established, replacing the Australian Film Development Corporation. [ADD] 

– The first government-sponsored delegation attends the Cannes Film Festival. [ADD] 

– Greater Union resumes investment in local features. [ADD]
