Milcho Manchevski’s Macedonian/UK co-production Pred dozhdot (Before the Rain) premieres at the Venice Film Festival, winning the Golden Lion.   Katrin Cartlidge stars in a film intertwining three tales set against the threat of a civil war.  It becomes the first Macedonian film to be nominated for an Oscar. New Zealand

Peter Jackson’s Heavenly Creatures, starring Kate Winslet and Melanie Lynskey as a pair of Wellington schoolgirls who murder the latter’s mother (Sarah Peirse), is released.   The film is based on a true story. [MORE] [ADD]
