27/12/1895: American Mutoscope and Biograph Co. Established

Henry Marvin, W.K.L. Dickson, Herman Casler and Elias Koopman, founders of American Mutoscope & Biograph

By November 1895, Herman Casler and W.K.L. Dickson had developed the Biograph projector.   The projector used wide-gauge film without sprockets, and was of a superior quality, and had been designed at the same time that the Mutoscope was converted into a projector by use of a mirror device.   The Mutoscope received its patent on the 5th November, and on the 14th an application was filed for a handheld version of the Mutoscope.   Correctly believing they had established the foundation of a major commercial success Casler and Dickson, together with Henry Marvin and Elias. Koopman, an entrepreneur who had grown rich from his invention of the pocket lighter, formed the American Mutoscope and Biograph Company – which was formerly known as the KMCD syndicate – on the 27th December 1895.    The premises of the new organisation were situated at 841 Broadway, New York.
