China's First Screening
Details of the arrival of cinema in the closed world of China are sketchy. It is known, however, from an advert in Shen Bao on the 10th of August 1896, that the first screening of films was on the 11th August 1896 at the Hsu Gardens in Shanghai. The films were shown as part of an entertainment show which included acrobats, magicians and fireworks. Film came to be known as dianguang yingxi (electric light shadow play) to the Chinese people.
