10/5/1896: Hungary's First Screening
In 1896, Hungary celebrated 1000 years of its existence with the Millennium Exhibition in Budapest. A magnificent new hotel, the Hotel Royal was built on the Grand Boulevard to accommodate the influx of visitors to the city for the celebrations, and it was in the coffee shop of this hotel that the first films were shown in Hungary on the 10th May 1896. Admission to each screening cost 50 pence. The first film ever made in Hungary was also probably made during the celebrations when Arnold Sziklay filmed Emperor Franz Josef opening the Exhibition.
