28/6/1896: Sweden's First Screening
The first screening of films took place in Sweden on the 28th June 1896 at the Pilstorp Exhibition of Industry and Crafts in the Malmo Summer Theatre They were staged by Danish theatre impresario Harald Limkilde, and the screenings were managed by a Swedish photographer named C. V. Roikjer. The shows ran until the 28th September, and were seen by an estimated 30,000 people.
Cinema reached Stockholm on the 21st July 1896, in a presentation given by Frenchman Charles Marcel, a correspondent for Le Soir. The show was given at the Djurgarten Glace Palace. The franchise was taken over by the Skladanowsky brothers in August. Their shows included film of Djurgarten shot by Max Skladanowsky, which was the first film to be made in Sweden. [ADD]
