28/9/1896: The Pathes Start Building an Empire
Possibly the first of the world’s movie empires was born this year in Paris on the 28th September 1896, when brothers Charles and Emile Pathé formed the Société Pathé Frères with capital of 40,000 francs. The company’s office was based at 98 rue de Richelieu. Initially underwritten by the already successful phonograph side of the business, the company quickly branched out into film production, and was the first to produce newsreels, the forerunner of the documentary film.
