1897: Go Rental
British entrepreneurs E. G. Turner and J. D. Walker were London-based businessmen who formed a partnership in 1896 to tour the country presenting shows with Edison Kinetoscopes and Phonographs before buying a Wrench Cinematograph and adding projected films to their programme. In 1897, Walker and Turner attempted to move up-class by emphasising the educational value of their films, but their plan backfired, so the pair returned to catering for the working classes. Having amassed a vast number of films during their time on the road, Walker and Turner hit on the idea of renting out films from their collection to other showmen, and thus became the world’s first film rental company.
