22/11/1897: 'Local Films For Local People'
In November 1897, Mitchell & Kenyon, a company that, until the recent discovery of more than 800 of their films, had remained little-known, was formed. Sagar J. Mitchell (1866-1952) ran a family photographic business, while James Kenyon (1850-1925) owned a slot machine manufacturing company. Armed with a camera, the partnership aimed to make short ‘local films for local people’, possibly commissioned by operators of fairground attractions. Based at 40 Northgate in Blackburn, their first screening of a film, Blackburn Market on a Saturday Afternoon took place on the 22nd November 1897. [ADD]
