1898: Gaumont Goes International

While Charles Pathé and Georges Méliès were both hard at work in their domestic studios, Leon Gaumont was already thinking further afield.   The Gaumont Company was formed in Great Britain this year; based in Cecil Court (which was commonly known as 'Flicker Alley'), off Charing Cross Road, in the heart of the UK's cinema industry, the outfit was initially merely a distribution subsidiary, but under the guiding hand of 22-year-old A. C. (Alfred Claude) Bromhead, quickly moved into production after the departure of initial manager John le Couteur. [ADD]
