19/6/1898:Jan Krizenecky
A 30-year-old architectural student named Jan Krizenecky emerged as Czechoslovakia's movie pioneer in 1898 when, together with his colleague Josef Pokorny, he purchased a Lumiere Cinematographe. On the 19th June he exhibited a number of films at an Architecture and Engineering Exhibition in Prague. Under the name of Cesky Kinematograf (Czech Kinematograph) he showed a number of actualities, including a river boat explosion on the River Moldau, and three fiction films featuring a popular cafe performer named Josef Svab-Malostransky. These films were entitled Dostavencicko Ve Mlynici (Appointment at the Mill), Plac a Smich (Smiles and Tears - featuring close-ups of Malostransky's face), and Vystavni Parkar a Lepic Plakatu (The Billsticker and the Sausage Vendor).
