1898: Oliver's Bikes
Two years after the first films were screened in Uruguay, the country's first filmmaker emerged in the form of Félix Oliver, a Spaniard born in Catalunya in 1856, who moved to Uruguay with his family in 1874. In his profession as manager of a paint shop, Oliver spent time in Europe searching for new products and, in 1898, visited a cinematography exhibition that captured his interest. He purchased a camera, projector and films, and immediately began filming scenes of Uruguay. The title of the first film made in Uruguay is unclear. Many film histories state that it is Oliver's Una carrera de ciclismo en el Velódromo de Arroyo Seco, while others are equally insistent that it wasn't made until 1901. [ADD]
