1898: The Colourful Captain
The grandly named William Norman Lascelles Davidson, a Captain in the 4th Battalion The Kings (Liverpool) Regiment, earned himself a toehold in the annals of cinematic history in this year when he patented a triple-lens camera with three filters in the primary colours situated behind each of the lenses. The idea was that this device would be able to film in colour, but no working model was ever constructed. While Davidson laboured for eight years and pumped around £3,000 into his project, he was ultimately unsuccessful. His efforts, however, did influence the development of Kinemacolour, the first successful colour film system invented by G. A. Smith. [ADD]
