1898: The World's First Film Competition
The world's first film-making competition took place in 1898 in the tiny principality of Monaco, and was won by 45-year-old Clément Maurice Gratioulet (known as Clément-Maurice), the man who had arranged rental of the Salon Indien in the Grand Café for the world's first screening of moving pictures for his former employers, the Lumiéres. He also filmed the surgical operations of Eugène-Louis Doyen in this year. Clément-Maurice's winning film was entitled Monaco vivant par les appareils cinématographiques.[ADD]
