15/12/1898: Vancouver Catches Up
Nearly eighteen months after the first film screening in Canada, the movies finally arrived in Vancouver, courtesy of John Schuberg, a Swedish native of Minneapolis whose professional name was Johnny Nash. Nash was primarily a magician, and had spent the previous four years touring the country. In 1898, he obtained an Edison projector, and projected films became a part of his act. His first film show took place on the 15th December 1898, and included scenes of the recently-fought Spanish-American war.
1898 also saw the first promotional films in Canada, when the Toronto-based Massey-Harris Company commissioned the Edison Manufacturing Company to produce a series of films to promote its products. [ADD]
