1899: Lubin Expands

Despite finding himself the focus of would-be movie monopolist Thomas Edison's wrathful gaze - in June, Edison's suit against Frederick M. Prescott for selling Lubin's films (despite Prescott being a large outlet for Edison himself) had put the New York distributor out of business - Philadelphia-based pioneer Siegmund Lubin opened the Cineograph Theater, claimed to be the States' first purpose built movie theatre.
