1899: Marey: A Smoother Operator

Continuing with his work into recording the movement of animals and humans, Etienne-Jules Marey, whose earlier work had proven so influential to the likes of Thomas Edison, patented a device which finally overcame the problem he had encountered with the even spacing of pictures on his Chronophotographic projector system. Marey's refinement to the projector used specially constructed rollers to grip the edges of the film - a method which meant he did not need to rely on Edison's patented 'sprocket' system. Also, in his quest to film movement invisible to the human eye, Marey devised a combination of camera and microscope, thus advancing the scope of scientific research. In the same year, Marey enhanced his photographic gun so that it could manage around 65 feet of film at one loading. [ADD]
