4/5/1899: The Cognac Blaze
The French cinema exhibition industry suffered a blow similar to that experienced at the Charity Bazaar fire in 1897 - albeit on a smaller, less aristocratic scale - when a fire broke out in a fairground picture show in the town of Cognac on 4th May. The blaze began at an American Vitagraph show staged by an exhibition company called Dane & Oger when the highly volatile celluloid film burst into flames. Within eight minutes the entire fairground was ablaze causing damage estimated at over 50,000 francs. [ADD]
