Om Puri Heads National Film Development Council

Om Puri

Om Puri’s three year appointment as head of the National Film Development Council in April 2008 saw him replace Manmohan Shetty, the founder of Adlabs.

Upon the announcement, Purl launched a ‘Co-operative’ initiative whereby top stars, technicians and writers would take reduced payment for movies in return for a share of their profits and an equity position.   The initiative was an attempt to enable young filmmakers to use established talent and offer support for screenplay training and film marketing.

The NFDC also announced that it had received Rupees300 million (approx £3.75 million) for 2008 productions, and that it would be backing seven films, four of which would be represented at 2008’s Cannes Film Festival.  Film titles backed by the Council included K. M. Madhusudhanan’s Bioscope, Lucky Red Seeds, Via Darjeeling and The White Elephant. [ADD]
