Australia Fails to Storm Box-Office
Australia, which stars Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, was released on Wednesday 26th November and earned a respectable A$7.8 (£3.39 million) in its five-day opening weekend, the biggest ever opening for a Luhrmann film in Australia.
Acknowledging that the film failed to storm the box office despite saturation media coverage, Fox pinned its hopes on a sustained run through word of mouth recommendations. Analysis suggested that the film was performing better at regional cinemas than in the cities, and that the core audience was made up of women attracted by the presence of leading man Hugh Jackman.
