International Furore over Knox Film

Director Claudio Carini described l’Ultima citta as a non-linear film about 12 female prison inmates who take an imaginary journey through seven fantasy cities. 21-year-old Amanda Knox who, with her former Italian boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito faced trial for murder and sexual violence in the killing of British student Meredith Kercher, performed the ‘To be or not to be’ speech from Hamlet. The film, which Carini began shooting in September 2007 – two months before Kercher’s murder on 1st November 2007 – was part of a series of social re-integration initiatives for the inmates of Capanne prison near Perugia which included various sporting and cultural activities.
Carini was reported to have said in a telephone interview that ‘Like all the others, she [Knox] acted very well. She was very disciplined.’ Carini also revealed that Knox acted both in English and Italian and ‘had a lot of fun.’
The 55-minute film, which also included excerpts from Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa, was due to be screened at Perugia’s Batik film festival on Sunday 14th December, but prison officials and the local authorities who commissioned the film pulled it from the festival fearing its screening may impact on Knox’s case which was due to begin on 16th January 2009. Antonio Fullone, director of the Capanne prison said ‘we thought it most appropriate not to screen it at the festival’ because of Knox’s participation, and that a decision on whether the film would be made public was yet to be made. A vast number of offers had been made by international media outlets for prints of the film. [ADD]
