Putin Takes Charge
The Russian federal press service announced that Prime Minister Vladimir Putin would ‘personally supervise’ government initiatives to support the film industry as chairman of the government council on the progress of domestic cinematography, which was formed as a result of the meeting in October 2008 of film bosses at St Petersburg’s Russian World Studios.
The new organisation would co-ordinate the work of government bodies, film industry professionals and companies. While it would not allocate funding, the council would investigate ways of improving state support for the production, distribution and promotion of Russian films domestically and internationally. The government press service also stated that the council would support the introduction of ‘innovative cinema technologies’ and implement measures to maintain Russian films’ market share on domestic release.
At the meeting in October, Putin described the ‘potential of cinema to be a major educational tool and valuable point of reference for society.’ [ADD]
