Fitna Fatwa

Geert Wilders

Geert Wilders' Fitna hadn’t actually been released when the fatwa was called – Wilders was hoping to have the completed film ready for airing in early March 2008.   Although he hadn’t found any broadcaster to screen the film, Wilders insisted the film would be available on his political party’s website, and on a dedicated site.

On Wednesday 27th February 2008, Wilders was summoned by the Dutch government to discuss the film, and was warned about the risks to Holland’s reputation abroad should the film be shown.   Wilders accused them of intimidation, a possible reason why the fitnathemovie.com domain name was registered with a US service provider and not one in Holland.

The Cairo International Film Festival for Children had already announced that it was dropping the Dutch entry, Where is Winky’s Horse, in protest at Wilders’ film, stating, through the festival’s director, Fawzi Fahmi, that the decision was a protest all who intention all and persistently insult and degrade monotheistic religion.
