Venice Days Without the Women

Compiled by the organisers of the Venice Film Festival’s Venice Days sidebar, the list of 100 Greatest Italian films caused instant controversy because of the omissions, with producer Grazio Volpi wanting to know, ‘Where are Lina Wertmueller and Liliana Cavani?’
As for the films that were included, seven were directed by Federico Fellini, six by Luchino Visconti, five each from Vittorio De Sica, Francesco Rosi and Mario Monicelli, four by Roberto Rossellini and three by Michelangelo Antonioni.
Unconventional efforts, such as Marco Ferreri’s The Ape Woman were included alongside such acknowledged classics as La dolce vita, Roma, citta aperta (Rome, Open City) and Ladri di biciclette. [ADD]
