Yasukuni Cancelled

Yasukuni (2007)

The decision by four cinemas – three in Tokyo and one in Osaka – to cancel planned screenings of Li Ying’s film Yasukuni, came in the wake of death threats made to staff at Argo Pictures, the film’s distributor, following press screenings late in 2007.

A spokesman for one of the cinemas, the Q-AX in Tokyo, said the cinema was acting to protect ‘the safety of its audience.’

Argo issued a statement saying, ‘We perceive a danger to the freedom of expression and the freedom of speech in Japanese society.’ [ADD]
