China Sees Red

Sharon Stone

The actress Sharon Stone was speaking to a Chinese media outlet on 29th May when she suggested that the earthquake, which claimed the lives of 67,000 people, may be linked to China’s recent treatment of Tibetans.  She said, ‘All these earthquakes and stuff happened and I thought, 'Is that karma?' When you are not nice, bad things happen to you.’

Her comments caused outrage across the country, with shopkeepers removing posters of the actress from their windows and the Uwe cinema chain threatening to ban all her films.   The chain’s founder, Ng See-Yuen, who was also chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, described the actress’s remarks as ‘inappropriate’ and suggested that actors shouldn’t bring personal politics into a humanitarian crisis.
