Batman Sues/Sued

The Dark Knight (2008)

Huseyin Kalkan, the mayor of the city of Batman, launched his action following the worldwide billion dollar success of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.   ‘There is only one Batman in the world,’ said Kalkan, who had only recently been released from prison following charges of supporting the Iraqi-based Kurdish Workers Party (PKK). ‘The American producers used the name of our city without informing us.’

The city of Batman is named after Batman River which flows into the Tigris and which derives its name from the Bati Raman mountains.  As part of his claim, Kalkan pointed to a number of unsolved murders and an unusually high female suicide rate for which he claimed the Batman film was responsible.   The suicides, however, had been linked to honour killings.    Kalkan also claimed that former residents of the city had experienced problems when attempting to register businesses abroad.

Although the Batman character first appeared in a DC Comics comic book in 1939, the mayor was reported to be gathering evidence to prove that the city pre-dated the debut of the caped crusader.

A Warner Brothers representative commented that, ‘We are only aware of this claim via press reports and have not seen any actual legal action.’ (Sources: Variety; lawiscool.com) [ADD]
