Hong Kong Seeks Partners

Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Wellington Fung Wing, secretary general of the Hong Kong Film Development Council, explained that in order to revive what was once known as the ‘Hollywood of the Orient,’ the council was appealing to Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia to co-produce films that would appeal to joint markets.   He also said that the council planned to send a delegation of approximately 60 people to Guangdong province on the mainland in December 2008 to investigate the possibility of Cantonese-language co-productions with studios there.

‘During the peak, every Hong Kong-made movie was sold and screened at cinemas in Taiwan,’ said Mr Fung. ‘But since 2001 or 2002, the value of Hong Kong films has dropped to a very low level. Producers would rather not sell the films. This is similar to the situation in Singapore and Malaysia’ [ADD]
