Piracy Lawyer Slain

Initial reports of the slaying of music and film piracy campaigner Kasim Cha Tong were hazy and conflicting with one source reporting that the 56-year-old Malaysian-born lawyer was shot at the door of his home and another claiming he was killed while leaving a restaurant.   However, the New Straits Times reported that the former police official and Anti-Corruption Agency officer was gunned down after dining at a restaurant approximately 2 kilometres from the border town of Sungai Golok.

Wan Seman Wan Salleh, the Sungai Golok deputy police chief, said that Kasim was walking towards his motorcycle when he was shot in the back with a sawn-off shotgun by the killer who then fled on a waiting motorcycle.   It was believed that the assassin was in the restaurant at the same time as the lawyer, who was dining with friends but left alone, but that there was no suggestion that the victim knew his killer.   Kasim was rushed to Sungai Golok hospital but staff there were unable to save him.

Kasim became famous in Thailand in the 1980s as an anti-piracy campaigner with the International Federation of the Phonogram Industry where he was deputy regional director.   He was also a director of the Motion Pictures Export Association of America.  (Source: New Straits Times) [ADD]
