Bollywood Strike Talks Stall
One day into the Bollywood strike, talks between the Federation of Western Cine Employees and the Film and Television Producers Guild stalled when the two sides failed to reach an accord regarding the Federation’s demands for more prompt payment for its members, a maximum 12-hour working day and safer working conditions.
In a press release the Western India Film Producers Association argued that the strike was illegal because notice was not filed in accordance with the Trade Union Act, and that the Federation was to blame for the daily wage earners' ‘miseries’ because it failed to follow a memorandum of understanding signed in January 2008.
In response, Federation president Dharmesh Tiwari claimed that many producers failed to honour their part of the agreement. He told wire services, ‘A lightman… should get a minimum of rupees 450 (£5.39) for working eight hours a day, but he ends up working for more than 24 hours and does not get payment also.’
This accusation was denied by Kavita Barjatya, the head of production at Raishri Films. ‘It's hard to believe that there are producers who haven't paid workers for months,’ he told the Asian edition of Time magazine. ‘There's so much work around these days, workers would simply leave and go elsewhere.’ [ADD]
