Cecchi Gori Released From Custody

Vittorio Cecchi Gori was arrested in June on charges of fraudulently attempting to move money around his companies in an attempt to appear insolvent in order to avoid paying creditors following the collapse of his Safin exhibition circuit.
The beleaguered movie mogul has consistently protested his innocence in the facing of mounting legal and financial difficulties, but managed a small victory in September 2008 when a Rome court ruled that Merrill Lynch owed him Euros 102 million (£80.9 million) for mismanagement of Cecchi Gori’s huge film library, which was put up as collateral for a large loan in 1998.
On Friday 10th October, Cecchi Gori held a packed 40-minute press conference flanked by four lawyers and his off-and-on girlfriend, Valeria Marini to argue his case.
‘In Italy, it takes five minutes to be accused and five years to be proved innocent,’ He complained. ‘Everyone on the street thinks they can make movies, and so they think people like me and my sainted father (Mario Cecchi Gori, who died in 1993) are frauds.’
Cecchi Gori went on to say that he was more appreciated in American than in Italy because few people in Italy understood the creative process.
Upon Cecchi Gori’s release, a Rome judge set 5th December as the date for his trial on the charges. [ADD]
