Putin Pledges More Money

The announcement that more funding would be provided for the domestic film industry came following a meeting between Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and leading film producers at the All-Russian Conference on Cinematography in St. Petersburg where Putin pledged 2 billion roubles (approx. £439 million). The finance was to be made available immediately for ‘films aimed at creating a system of values corresponding to the interests of the Russian society and strategic goals of national development.’
Putin added, ‘Starting in 2010 it is planned to allocate about 4.3 billion rubles (£944 million) annually on ... supporting national film production companies.’
The initiative was aimed at increasing Russia’s share of domestic film distribution to 30% by the end of 2012, and followed the transfer of responsibility for film financing to a new department of cinematography within the culture ministry after the closure of the federal agency for cinema and culture in May 2008.
